Safer Internet Day 2017

This week the school celebrated Safer Internet Day, which focused on the images we share online.

The day started with an assembly prepared by the Digital Leaders, who asked which apps we use and how we share images. We were encouraged to think about how much we share, whether we are sharing personal and private information, and whether we are sharing images without asking first.

In classrooms, lots of activities took place, such as learning a song about being safe online, sorting images into ‘ok to share/not ok to share’, creating emojis and lots of discussion about what we do online.

Perhaps one of the most surprising things is how much the children are sharing online with strangers. Lots of the children claimed to have upwards of 100 followers on different apps such as musical.ly and Instagram without knowing who those followers were.

 

Clearly this is concerning. Our children have been encouraged to think carefully about what they share and who they share with. Please talk to them about this and make every day on the internet safer for them.

 

The BBC were reporting widely about social media and the role we can play as teachers and parents. This article discusses whether we share too much unnecessary personal information about our children, while there is a great selection of articles that could  be discussed with your children here.

May Procession Invite

The children have been busy practising for Friday’s May Procession. Parents, friends and family are all invited to attend. We will gather together on the infant playground at 1.15pm.

Athletics Challenge

To focus on the forth coming Olympics in the summer holidays, the children will be concentrating on improving their athletic skills in the 3 areas of running, jumping and throwing during the summer term.

Each child will be using measuring skills to see how well they can run, jump and throw with the aim of improving their performance by the end of the term to record their personal best.

We might even have Gold, Silver and Bronze winners!

Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday 9th February, all of the children at St. Joseph’s took part in Safer Internet Day. This was a day to raise awareness of how brilliant the Internet is, but also to think about we can make it a safer, better place.

We started the day with an assembly. The Digital Leaders helped to ask questions and made us think about what actions to take when we see something we don’t like online.

After this, each class worked on a particular element of how to be safer online: some made rules, some created role plays and others even sang songs!

Maths Investigations

This week, the whole school have been using athletics to carry out maths investigations. From races to endurance, girls v boys and measuring distances, the children will be looking at how to present their data and identify patterns.

The school field has been a hub of activity (and thankfully the sun has been shining…a bit) and there has been a wonderful atmosphere as children worked together to determine how to carry out their investigations and how best to record their data.

Results and findings will be posted on blogs, as well as being shown on a maths display in school. Keep a look out!

 

Jam Sandwich

This afternoon saw St. Joseph’s embark on their first venture into the new Computing curriculum. There are some elements that remain from the old curriculum, but there are lots of new things to learn too.

The Computer Science element of the new curriculum will see children solving problems, creating algorithms, testing and debugging programs and much more. Some will create their own games; others will build whole websites.

This afternoon, all of the children in key stages 1 and 2 programmed a ‘robot’ (a willing teacher!) to make a jam sandwich. It was much harder than it sounds, with lots of fingers in jam, bread on the floor and buttered desks!

The children learnt to write a simple algorithm, check for problems (bugs) with their program and then debug it. This will help them in the future as we all go further into the new curriculum. Keep your eyes peeled 🙂

 

Model Village Day

We have been having a very industrious time planning and making our model village. There has been lots of maths work on measuring and constructing and some excellent teamwork.

Foundation Stage has shown us the town where Elliot the Superhero boy lives. Key Stage 1’s seaside scene made us long for a day at the beach. Years 3 and 4 built an impressive array of Roman buildings and Years 5 and 6 brought us back to the present with their town/ rural display. The attention to detail was great.

Come and look at our KS1 mosaic

Over half term KS1 were asked to design a mosaic for the Infant playground based on our school mission statement. The best ideas were put together and every child in Year 1 and 2 worked hard to produce this fabulous piece of artwork. We will post a photograph of the finished product very soon !
